For students taking the NECAPS this is a great practice site. You can take a test, check your answers, see what you got wrong and go back to that example and try again.

This video is a great interactive activity for students who are learning about subtraction. I showed this video to my class as a review and they really enjoyed it. They enjoyed being able to complete the problems with the teacher and thought it was a fun and exciting way to practice subtraction. I have placed this video on my blog so that students can practice these skills at home and for parents to see what we are working on in class. GLE M(N&O)-K-3

Subtraction
Strategies

-

Decompose

(The number being subtracted can be "taken apart" or decomposed using place value.)

465 – 129
465 – 100 = 365
365 – 20 = 345
345 – 5 = 340
340 – 4 = 336

Change 1 & Compensate

(Change one number to a multiple of 10, then compensate later for that number.)

465 – 129

(Add 1 to make 130)

465 - (129 + 1)
465 - 130
465 - 130 = 335

(Add 1 back in for the 1 changed earlier)

335 + 1 = 336

Adding Up

(Add up from the number being subtracted to the total. Change the problem from a subtraction problem to an addition problem.)

Change 465 – 129 = n to 129 + n = 465

129 + n = 465

(Add up to multiples of 10 or 100)

129 + 1 = 130
130 + 70 = 200
200 + 200 = 400
400 + 65 = 465
1 + 70 + 200 + 65 = 336

OR

(Add 100’s until you get close, but don’t go over the number.)

129 + 300 = 429
429 + 1 =430
430 + 30 = 460
460 + 5 = 465
300 + 1 + 30 + 5 = 336

Decompose Both and Subtract

(May end up with negative numbers.)

465 – 129
400 – 100 = 300
60 – 20 = 40
5 – 9 = -4
300 + 40 -4 = 336

Gingerbread math
This website is a way to learn how to multiply. For every correct answer the gingerbread house gets bigger. For example, if you find the correct answer for 0x7 a piece of candy will be placed on the gingerbread house. After all the questions are answered correctly, you will see a lovely suprise!

3.14....It is a very interesting number. (PI) How many times does a raduis square fit into a circle with that radius? Fun and concrete examples.radius square, andFlores and Regis PDF " How Many TImes Does a Radius Square Fit Into the Circle?" (N+O 6-1, 6-3, G+M 6-5)

Timez Attack
My students absolutely love this game. Timez Attack is a free game that you download to your PC (more levels are available if you purchase the upgrade). Every door you come to has a multiplication problem to solve. You need to solve the multiplication problem before the ogre comes after you. A different multiplication table is practiced at each level but is repeated throughout the game. My students wanted to play this game every free moment they had. Some even downloaded it at home.
